Staying Civic Minded During The Summer

Author:

California summers are great for fun in the sun at those famous beaches or just kicking it with friends—sounds perfect, right? But what about those days when you want to do a little more or try something new? Summers with California DECA are just the thing for you! If you’re interested in strengthening your chapter’s membership, having some fun and helping your community, here are some tips for staying civically conscious during the summer.
1.        Organize a Volunteer Day:  A volunteer event is not only a great way to support your community and get community service hours, but also a great way to catch up with chapter members and friends over the summer.  Either organizing a project, like a beach clean up, or attending an already planned event, such as a marathon, is a fun way to spend a summer day. When it comes to organizing the event, decide which area your community needs work, such as cleaning up areas, planting trees or cleaning out neighbor’s yards, plan a date and invite everyone you know! Bring music and snacks to make this event even more fun and last but not least, don’t forget your camera!
2.       Have a Charity Fundraiser:  Have a social, but also socially conscious, event.  A chapter dinner at a restaurant that gives a percent back, a carwash, or a pool party are all examples of events that not only are fun and make money, but also spread the word about your chapter. Donating the proceeds to Make A Wish Foundation is a great way to give back to others and make memories.
With activities like these, you and your chapter can have fun, while still being civically conscious.
