DVHS DECA Celebrates DECA Month!
Dougherty Valley DECA organized multiple events and campaigns in honor of DECA Month this November. For one, members were encouraged to make #DECAMonth posts throughout the month. To set a good example, the chapter’s Instagram account made posts on a daily basis.
Furthermore, multiple teams from DV took part in the DECA Idea Challenge during the Global Entrepreneurship Week. The opportunity to compete in this unique challenge was also offered to the middle school students attending DVHS DECA BOOST, Dougherty Valley DECA’s middle school outreach program.
A teacher appreciation campaign was also organized, in which CTE teachers, school administration staff, the DVHS DECA advisor, and other staff members on campus were thanked with cards, candy, donuts, and bundt cakes. This was a great way to spread thanks and show appreciation just before Thanksgiving.
Finally, a DECA Spirit Week was organized during the last week of November. Spirit days included DECA Blue Day, Business Formal Day, and a Conference Memorabilia Day. On Business Formal Day, DVHS DECA topped off the DECA Month with a successful mini-conference!
Dougherty Valley DECA Starts Off the NorCal MiniCon Circuit
Dougherty Valley DECA successfully hosted its second annual mini-conference on November 28, 2017. This conference had over 120 competitors from four different chapters and received the assistance of over 25 professional volunteers as well as the CA DECA state officer team.
The purpose of this mini-conference was not only to give first and second year members a chance to gain competitive experience before NorCal CDC, but also to give third and fourth year members a similar opportunity. This was achieved by having two competitive categories – novice and varsity. Two separate events were offered – HTDM for partners and MCS for individuals – and each event was further divided into the two competitor categories. The Top 8 finalists for role play and testing, as well as the Top 3 overall competitors, for each event and category were announced at the closing awards ceremony and presented with medals and glass trophies.
Thanks to the implementation of the unique novice and varsity category system, both old and new members were able to have a night of competition, networking, and fun. DVHS DECA Co-President Disha Srivastava commented, “It was great to see some of our older members get to sharpen their skills before NorCal in January. It was even better to see our freshman members try out competition for the first time! We hope that other MiniCon circuit schools will try a similar competitive category system to be more inclusive to DECA members.”
