Message From the President
By Emily Zhang, State President
It’s bittersweet. The last month of the DECA year is full of celebration: celebration of the year’s competitive successes, newly developed friendships, and unforgettable memories. But also, it’s time to say goodbye to the 2017-2018 season. Whether you’re a new member, graduating senior, advisor, or supporter, let’s all take a moment to reflect upon the amazing year we’ve had together. Thank you all for making our time together truly limitless, and here’s to the start of #SummerofDECA!
#SummerofDECA
By Zuhair Imaduddin and Sanjana Aithal, Northern California DAT
If you are like me, your chapter’s training workshops have ended, the end of the year banquet is over, and school is finished. You might be sad that the 2017-2018 DECA is coming to an end, but get excited because the 2018-2019 competitive year is almost here! We begin the new competitive year with Summer of DECA. The summer time is an amazing opportunity to get a lot of DECA work done before the upcoming school year begins so you can be #ReadyForIt. The “DECAcation” you express this summer can give you a significant edge over your competitors at your upcoming district career development conference.
Here are a few tips to help you maximize this Summer of DECA:
- Plan Ahead
Each one of us have personal summer commitments from SAT classes to family vacations; use a calendar to plan out your summer schedule and allocate sufficient time for DECA. This includes meetings with: team mates, business leaders, organization representatives, DECA Alumni, parents, and classmates. - Select Your Events
The first step that all DECA members must take is to select their competitive events for the upcoming year. This can be a challenge, especially for first time members. Use the DECA Inc. website as a resource to research events you are interested in. Feel free to ask returning chapter members, advisors, and alumni for more help in selecting events. Be sure to select your event early enough in the summer so you can begin your preparations for the upcoming year. - Bond with Your Chapter
Summer is a great time to get to know the members of your chapter! This is the beginning of spending a lot of time with each other from workshops to conferences; forming strong relationships through activities such as watching movies or simply grabbing a cup of coffee will make competition season much more enjoyable!
