Martin Luther King DECA Participates in H&R Block Open House

Author:

Riverside, CA—On October 18, 2011, the Martin Luther King High School DECA chapter had the opportunity to participate in the H&R Block Dollars and Sense Open House and share about DECA and the importance of DECA in our schools. H&R Block invited school administrators from the Riverside area to come and learn about its Dollars and Sense program.
Students from Martin Luther King DECA had the great opportunity to represent California DECA and speak at the Open House to area high  school administrators about the DECA program and the importance of having DECA on high school campuses. California DECA put together promotional packets on DECA and how to start a chapter for the students to share with the administrators. Chapter presidents Adam Herweck and Garrett Mikels and Vice President Alec Cardenas represented Martin Luther King DECA at the presentation.
The H&R Block Dollars and Sense program aims to help students understand money as an investment in everyone’s future. H&R Block has  contributed more than $2.5 million towards teaching high school students skills they can use to make smart financial decisions. According to H&R Block, 50% of students graduate without money management skills. The program, which includes 71 participating schools across California, aims to change that statistic.
As a DECA partner H&R Block sponsors the H&R Block Dollars & Sense Challenge for DECA members. The challenge uses computerized
simulations to give students experience in managing personal finances, including bank accounts, credit and debit cards, bills, insurance and investing. The students then must interpret actions, charts, and graphs to make strategic financial decisions and optimize net worth. This simulated financial experience helps increase money management skills of DECA members while giving them an opportunity to compete against other members in the state and nation.
