Sleepless in Seattle

Author: California DECA

Sleepless in Seattle. If the 2016 Western Region Leadership Conference could be put into just three words, those would be it. Washington DECA planned a phenomenal conference packed with mock competition, motivational speakers, networking opportunities, and unique experiences in the Emerald City.
With association officers and members from all over Washington State and the Western Region, Team 66 began the experience with an awe-inspiring Opening Session, ending with a thought-provoking keynote from Calvin Wayman, one of The Top 30 Entrepreneurs Under 30. The next day provided the opportunity to choose from an impressive variety of workshops including competition prep and career readiness. The California DECA State Officer Team gave a workshop entitled “Own Your Competition”, in which attendees were given tips that would help them go above and beyond in their roleplays and written events. In addition to the workshops, student were able to compete in a Mock Competition scenario, where immediate feedback from the judge allowed them to prepare for the upcoming district conferences.
Vendors from all over Washington gathered at the Marketing Fair. Students were able to interact with organizations such as the University of Washington, Men’s Wearhouse, and Bread. Despite the busy conference schedule, there was still plenty of time to explore the beautiful city of Seattle and the Museum of Flight, network with other members, and enjoy DECAFit Zumba Lessons! A bittersweet ending, the DECATalks Closing Session brought forth two DECA talks, both of which inspired students to forge their own legacy and own their future.
The rain couldn’t stop all the attendees at WRLC from having an incredible time. Looking into the future, California DECA is extremely excited for the 2017 Western Region Leadership Conference in Phoenix!
