Northern California DECA University

Author:

San Francisco, California–On Saturday, September 7, 107 DECA members from 12 schools across Northern California traveled to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in San Francisco to attend California DECA’s Northern California DECA University. DECA University is a one-day event geared towards training DECA chapter officers to effectively lead their chapters in the coming year.
The day began with three guest speakers from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM). These speakers gave students a glimpse into their field of business and explained how FIDM uses technology to stay at the forefront of their industry.
The day continued with a presentation of California DECA’s 2013-2014 program of work. Following this presentation, trainers from TRI Leadership Resources, LLC taught students how to create a program of work for their DECA chapters. The teachers challenged students to think critically and find ways to reach new heights in the coming year.
After the program of work session, students in attendance developed skills that are specific to their leadership positions within DECA. Students separated into four different groups and explored one of four topics: managing meetings, social media, membership recruitment, and chapter finance.
The day ended with a trip to AT&T Park for a Giants baseball game! This excursion served as an excellent opportunity for student leaders from various chapters throughout Northern California to network and build relationships that they will be able to leverage in the coming year.
“Networking with all the leaders in Northern California showed me many new ways to manage my chapter,” said Ray Wei, Vice President of Communications at Amador Valley DECA.
Southern California will be hosting DECA University for chapters in Southern California September 21, 2013.
